Portretten van het Amsterdamse nachtleven

Vele kunstenaars hebben zich al laten inspireren door het nachtleven. Zo ook Joe Holbrook. Een Londenaar die Nightlife als middle name heeft. ‘s Nachts legt hij de scene vast op foto’s en overdag keert Holbrook terug in zijn studio waar hij zijn foto’s van de voorgaande avond bekijkt en selecteert. Zo werkt hij aan de portrettering van het anonieme nachtleven. 

De afgelopen 2 maanden heeft Joe Holbrook doorgebracht in Amsterdam. Sinds zijn aankomst hier heeft hij zich in het nachtleven gestort en zich meer dan eens laten zien op plekken als Bitterzoet, De Kring en de Winston. Hij heeft zichzelf in Amsterdam geïnstalleerd in zijn tijdelijke atelier in de Rooms of Red Bull op de Wallen. Hier heeft hij gewerkt aan een nieuwe serie schilderijen voor zijn Amsterdamse expositie ‘In Deep’ die vanaf vrijdag 14 augustus geopend is in de Rooms of Red Bull. De expositie is een nieuwe serie van anonieme portretten uit het nachtleven van Amsterdam.

Diary of Cool had de gelegenheid om Joe wat vragen te stellen, waarbij we natuurlijk ook willen weten wat de connectie is tussen zijn werk en muziek.

DoC: Why Amsterdam?
JH: My attention was brought towards Amsterdam when I was invited over to be part of a show at the street lab by an art curator called Jeroen Smeets. I was then asked to do a solo show at the Rooms of Red Bull so jumped at the chance.

DoC: In which way is Amsterdam different than the other big cities you have been to?
JH: The way of life here is very relaxed, people have stresses but they deal with them in a different way to people in cities like London. Also the art scene is very spontaneous. There’s no such thing as a weekend if you feel like going out on a Tuesday you just do it and go with the flow and if you feel like working on a Sunday then you do that also.

DoC: Which role does music play for you in terms of inspiration?
JH: Music plays quite a big role when going out and getting my images because it determines the person and often the style I am going to capture. As for painting, I have to work with music playing always. My taste changes depending on the mood I’m in. Sometimes its Kings of Leon, or English acts like The Cribs, White Lies, or Laura Marling, and sometimes hiphop or dubstep like Dead Prez and Biggie or Skream and Caspa. 

DoC: If Amsterdam would be an artist, which artist would it be?
JH: Probably someone like Neil Young who is always true to his self and his music and also lives the life he wishes to follow? Thats a bit of a trickey question?!

Volgens de aankondiging overstijgt het werk van Joe Holbrook de quick-fix naar de party-photos van gisteravond, maar biedt het een inzichtvolle blik in de scene van het nachtleven en de mensen die deze scene maken tot wat het is. Het oudere werk dat we van Joe hebben gezien belooft veel, maar Diary of Cool gaat in Rooms of Red Bull wel checken wat hij van Amsterdam heeft gemaakt. Be there!
